Why Scrapping the Carbon Tax must be a Priority

July 08, 2019

As I travel across our riding of Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa (DSRN) and listen to the hard-working Canadians whose ideas and concerns will help me better represent them if elected Member of Parliament, I try to find the matters that directly impact the unique way of life we proudly share in rural Manitoba. By identifying these important issues, I can work towards making a positive difference for the individuals, families and communities of our riding through proposals and policies.

One issue that has become prominent is the Liberal government’s latest tax grab; the carbon tax. I understand the importance of protecting our environment, an issue I will address going forward; however, the carbon tax does absolutely nothing for the environment. The problem with Justin Trudeau’s government is how out-of-touch it is. This government fails to understand the way of life that we share. They don’t understand that we can’t just hop on a bus or bicycle and go to work. Working individuals across our riding make the sacrifice of large fuel bills and long commutes to support their families. The last thing they need is another bill.

Driving is incorporated in almost every individual’s lifestyle in our riding. Whether it is the farmer who racks up a large fuel bill in hopes of a good crop or the parent who drives hours so their children can take part in sports and other extra-curricular activities. Taxing us common folk that work for a living is an insulting burden.

To make matters worse, government documents show that the Liberals are planning for a carbon tax of $300 a tonne, 15 times higher than the current.  If implemented, the average family would pay $1000 more to heat their home while fuel prices could increase by 60 cents. Our government should be supporting our way of life, not condemning it. This is why Canadians can’t afford a re-elected Liberal government.

I look forward to working hard to ensure that our way of life in DSRN is not forgotten and will be fighting alongside Canada’s Conservative team to guarantee that the carbon tax is a thing of the past.

Sincerely,

Dan Mazier
